Enhancing thermal performance with System Management Framework
Surface design offers adaptability. To support all form factors and silicon, we created the System Management Framework (SMF), a platform-independent system for managing fans and passive cooling. Complementary to Intel’s optimized architecture, it ensures seamless processor performance while maintaining expected quality standards. This approach enables all silicon partners to excel within shared thermal and power limits. SMF also streamlines engineering with consistent tools, configuration and tuning methods across products.
SMF uses Intel’s refined configurable power limits, dynamically allocating power across the CPU, GPU and NPU within the SOC to maximize performance. Surface devices utilize these interfaces innovatively for thermal and power management, harnessing dynamic power limits. Beyond thermal optimization, SMF manages broader power management functions. Future blog posts will detail SMF’s role across our portfolio.
Secure by design
Drawing on Microsoft's unmatched security knowledge and enterprise expertise, Surface Pro for Business and Surface Laptop for Business are engineered to empower businesses through end-to-end, chip-to-cloud security. From design to manufacturing, hardware to firmware, and user experiences to IT management, every layer works individually and together to enable robust and seamless endpoint protection. With advanced Windows 11 Pro security features enabled by default and deep integration with the Microsoft management ecosystem, these devices simplify the path to modern, secure productivity.
Designing security into the foundation, Surface Pro and Surface Laptop are Secured-core PCs with the most advanced Windows 11 security capabilities enabled by default. These include Memory Integrity, Secure Boot and Memory Access Protection—all backed by TPM 2.0 provide protection from sophisticated attacks.
Secure identities are essential for confidently adopting and accessing AI experiences. For instance, Recall (in preview)[7] uses passwordless authentication via Windows Hello to secure access to saved snapshots. With Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) enabled by default, Virtualized Based Security (VBS) backed by TPM 2.0 isolate and protect user's authentication data and help further secure the data communication channel.
Both Surface Pro and Surface Laptop feature optimized Windows Hello cameras, supporting seamless login and authenticated access to critical data. Surface Pro for Business includes NFC, and we are broadening the availability of the Smart Card Reader on Surface Laptop for Business to more SKUs and markets, offering additional options for passwordless protection.
To further enhance security and reliability, the Microsoft Pluton security processor available on Surface Pro for Business and Laptop for Business will be updated with an all-new feature. Integrated directly into Copilot+ PC processors, Pluton delivers built-in, next-generation security. Designed as a secure platform, Pluton enables Microsoft to protect critical secrets like credentials, user identities, encryption keys and more. Because Pluton resides within the System on Chip (SOC), data is significantly harder to remove even if an attacker has installed malware or has physical control of the PC.
Simplifying management and delivering the latest protections against current and emerging threats, Pluton receives its firmware and feature updates directly from Microsoft. This makes it easy to provide new capabilities with little to no intervention needed. One such capability that will be coming with future updates to Intel Core Ultra processors (Series 2), Snapdragon X Series and AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processors is the Pluton Key Storage Provider (KSP).
The Pluton KSP and its integration with Entra ID and Microsoft Intune will enhance chip-to-cloud security and reliability for Entra ID sign-in by protecting tokens used by those services generated with Pluton hardware for device-bound security in zero trust workflows. KSP will also improve reliability by minimizing the ability to inadvertently clear keys when repairing other aspects of the device to reduce the chance that a user encounters a disruption in their work with a problem in signing on or accessing their data. Read more about Pluton and the KSP in the latest blog from the Windows Security team here. Additionally, you can read more about the Surface approach to security in this blog and in our technical documentation here.
